Wheat School: Scouting Winter Wheat in the Early Spring – Patrick Lynch

One of the first things that you need to do as winter comes to a conclusion is evaluate your winter wheat stand.  Depending on the conditions of the past winter, the amount of winter kill can vary and difficult to  properly evaluate.  If you are too hard on your self you could decide to rip up a perfectly good crop or not making the tough decision could result in a disastrous weedy, low yielding mess.

Patrick Lynch is a very well known crop consultant, mentor and trainer of crop scouting.  I asked Pat about the proper ways to evaluate your winter wheat stand in the spring time.

Pat does a great job in this video discussing that good crop scouting involves being representative, accurate and quantitative.  Pat explains why each of these are so important and lead to a successful evaluation.  I really enjoyed my discussion with Pat and there is a tonne of value in this edition of the wheat school.
